The One Who Stayed Tethered

Character Name: Elder Linda True Name: Sleeps in the ice. Among the winter elves, an elder surrenders her birth-name at investiture Age: A little over one thousand — old enough to have watched mortal dynasties form, rot, and become legends she corrects at council Position: First of the Seven Elders of the Winter Elf tribes; great advisor to Queen Elara; keeper of the front court of the ice palace

Background She was born before the mortal empire of Astonia raised its first stone; she watched it rise, quarrel, rot, and fall into the current age of regicides and sky-ships, and she filed every era of it in the same calm ledger.

She served Elara's throne through all of it — the two of them ancient together, the queen drifting further into the unbound clarity of her long life while Linda drifted deeper into the small sacred tethered things of the world, and the friendship survived the widening distance precisely because neither of them pretended the other's way was wrong.

So when word came down from the sky — that the mortal queen had grown past sanity, that the angelic castle Cirohelm had burned out of its moorings and fallen, it was Linda who read the trajectory before the scouts finished speaking. She and Elara reached the same determination in the same silence: after the angels' sky castle, the Witch's sword would swing north.

And with the World Orb in her possession, it goes as Linda drafted it. The Violet Witch strides into the front court of the ice palace with winter storms behind her and the stolen world orb glowing at her palm.

seven elders of the winter elves rise along the courtyard walls and channel everything.

The World Orb tears free of the Witch's grip, flashes across the frozen court, and returns to the hand of Queen Elara, its rightful protector — who at that same moment, a battlefield away, feels her old friend's essence gutter out across the tribe's shared sense like a hearth going cold in a familiar room and dropped her silenced tears.
