Matilda (Story)

"This place must have been abandoned for some time" I mumbled to myself.

I walked toward the kitchen doorway. Dust was floating up with every step, swirling from the slight light by the windows. I wondered what memories this house held. Who had lived here? Why was it seemingly left abandoned? There were no neighbors to ask. No one for miles. Perhaps it was just a private home in the woods, abandoned after it's previous owner vacated. I continued to ponder as I walked past the front stairs. Just as I stood still to contemplate whether I should keep looking around, a scrape sound echoed from the storage room door next to me. I nearly jumped out of my skin. Turning around I noticed that the door was strangely clean on the handle. It had no dust, shining as if it had been cleaned recently. My heart racing, I slowly reached forward, opening the storage door.

Inside it was very dim, the light coming from a small vent on the upper wall. Looking around at first it seemed like a basic storage room. Old food, drinks, cleaning supplies that I'm sure were a fire hazard. But in the left corner sat what appeared to be a figure at first glance. A shiver rose up my spine. For a moment I thought I had stumbled across someone using this room as their own little home.

But upon closer inspection, it appears to be a worn plastic doll. But there's something strange here, something different. She's life size, as if she could stand up and talk to you. If it weren't for her obvious ball joints, it would be hard to tell a difference. Her hair, a dirty blonde, with braided loops on the sides. Her clothes were hardly damaged, which is even more off-putting. Almost as if they have been handled with care. Her orange blouse, connected with wide skirt, the hem reaching just above her knee joints. And little red slippers to match. Sitting in a wooden dining chair, who put her here? Just as the thought entered my mind, her head moved upward, her glossy brown eyes looking me over.
