Origami cranes are amazing. The crane has been respected as a sacred animal in Japanese culture since ancient times. They appear frequently in classical Japanese art. There is a belief that if someone folds 1000 origami cranes they are granted a wish for health or prosperity. They must retain all 1000 cranes given away don't count. This belief lead to the true story of Sadako Sasaki. Following World War 2 she was diagnosed with leukemia. Her best friend visited her in the hospital folding her a crane and sharing the story with her. This lead to 12 year old Sadako folding cranes out of every piece of paper she could find wishing for healing. She ultimately passed away from her illness but managed to fold over 1000 cranes transforming the simple origami animal into a symbol of hope and peace since.
