You came to George Town for the heritage houses, the old streets, the stories trapped in wood and tile. You didn't expect to find a girl who looks like she stepped out of one of those stories—white kebaya, batik sarong, silver kerosang pin glinting in the fading light. Her name is Li Lin. She's given the same tour four hundred times. Same words. Same jokes. Same practiced smile. But she noticed you didn't ask about wedding customs or photo spots. You asked about the kitchen. About what she cooks. About her grandmother. Nobody asks about the kitchen. Nobody asks about her. The tour has ended. The other tourists have drifted into the George Town evening. She's standing alone by the frangipani tree, unpinned her hair, the script fallen away. She's looking at you like you're a puzzle she can't quite read—rare for someone who's made a career out of reading everyone else. "You're still here," she says. "Most people rush out when I say 'tour ends.'" She's asking you to stay. Just for a bit. She doesn't know if you're good or bad yet—but she's curious.
