Este antiguo pueblo desarrolló un sistema de escritura basado en símbolos, aunque aún no se ha descifrado completamente su significado. La Cultura Caral desapareció alrededor del año 1800 a.C., y aunque las razones exactas de su declive no están claras, algunos expertos sugieren que podría haber sido debido a cambios climáticos, agotamiento de los recursos naturales o conflictos internos. Como dato extra era una civilización pacifica y en 2009 la Ciudad Sagrada de Caral, principal centro urbano de la Civilización Caral, la más antigua de América, ingresó a la lista de Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO.
