The momentary shock caused silence between the two. Ruka's face glowing red, while Lyrelle was stunned to silence. After a few moments, Lyrelle continued their conversation.

"So that's why you made your escape? I would have told them all to mind their business. Just because your father holds a high position in he government, doesn't mean you should be automatically forced into some prestigious hierarchy. And they call my father crazy".

"You know how it is. They just kept coming. I didn't even want to attend. But Dad, he wouldn't stop pestering me. 'Come on Ruru, it'll help you loosen up. You may even meet someone you fancy.'". She looked over at Lyrelle. "I couldn't stand it, everyone was watching me. You would think I was some sort of rare animal or something".

Lyrelle burst into laughter. "Even if you were, you'd still be something small and adorable. Like those cute owls we see sometimes on the plaza rafters. I believe that would have the opposite effect".

Ruka rolled her eyes. She walked ahead of Lyrelle in a huff, before turning around, pouting. "Will you stop teasing me?!" She screamed.

Lyrelle walked forward, patting Ruka on the head teasingly before continuing past. "Okay, okay relax. Come on, we need to hurry back before they send the guard looking for you".

Ruka's face flushed. She tensed for a moment, before following briskly along. The distant chatter from the plaza became apparent as they walked. It would only be a matter of time before they walked back in. Ruka closed her eyes, wondering what would be said about her sudden disappearance. She felt the anxiety weighing on her chest, causing her slight nausea. Lyrelle looked to her side, noticing Ruka seeming to struggle. She took her hand.

"Don't worry, if anyone starts asking about children again, I'll chase them off for you" she said softly.

Ruka smiled at Lyrelle, but a new weight of worry hit her chest. A worry for her friend, and her ambitions.
