Alastor being a demon that could posses Emil.

Zero, through many horrifying, twisted experiments, bound his soul to the half of the sword that contained Alastor, allowing him to become possessed at will. In his possessed form, his abilities are enhanced to a frightening degree, at the cost of losing control of his own motor functions while still being able perceive things around himself.

Zero would go on to escape this lab, finding himself in the "City of Tears", a forever raining domed megacity in the post-apocalypse. After a meteor struck the planet and released with it, the scourge plague. Creating many horrifying abominations, primarily "husks", black goo infested, zombies.
