Did you know? Gau Beltza/Arimen Gaua #euskera
Long before Halloween became popular in the Basque Country, Gau Beltza (“Black Night”) or Arimen Gaua (“Night of the Souls”) was celebrated in different parts of Euskal Herria. One of the most fascinating traditions was hollowing out pumpkins, potatoes, or turnips, placing a candle inside, and using them as mysterious lanterns. 🕯️🎃
These lights were associated with guiding or remembering the souls of those who had died, while families also gathered around seasonal foods such as roasted chestnuts. The tradition became less common during the 20th century, but it is now being revived in many Basque towns. So those spooky illuminated pumpkins aren't simply a Halloween import—they have their own history in Basque rural traditions!
