...Charlotte rose from the ground only when passersby began to cast her openly puzzled glances. Had it not been for those looks, she might have remained there until evening, basking in the sun’s warmth without a care. It was hard to believe that the very light which had brought her nothing but pain and fear for more than two centuries now wrapped her in a gentle, almost tender heat.

“If the sun no longer holds the power to harm me…” the girl mused, brushing blades of grass from her dress, “then it stands to reason that other pleasures of humankind might also suit me.”

Without much hesitation, Charlotte stepped into the nearest eatery and ordered a variety of dishes, intent on trying everything at once. When a tray piled high with food was placed before her, she cautiously picked up a hamburger… and dared to take her first bite.

The girl froze, lips parted as if afraid to disturb a sensation she had not yet learned to name. Then she chewed carefully - slowly, almost reverently. The juices of the meat, the softness of the bun, a strange but pleasant saltiness, all of it crashed over her at once like a tide of sensations she had been denied for centuries.

She hastily took another bite, bolder now, hungrier. Then another. Very soon, her earlier restraint gave way to something like childlike wonder...
